OSUN COLLEGE COUNCIL CHAIR DECRIES MIGRATION OF TECHNICIANS

The Chairman of the Governing Council of Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, Diran Odeyemi, has called on the government at all levels to make the labour market more appealing for workmen.

Odeyemi said this would reduce the high number of technicians migrating to Europe and other parts of the world.

He expressed fear that the country might face a dearth of experts in vocations soon if the problem was not addressed.

Odeyemi, who spoke shortly after he was formally received by the management of the institution, said technicians trained in polytechnics in the country ranked among the best globally and were sought after in Europe.

Describing vocational and technical education as a critical need for development, Odeyemi also observed that the dearth of experts in different vocations had been the bane of the country’s growth.

The board chairman however challenged the management of the polytechnic to further produce technicians of top quality in various fields that would drive Osun’s quest for development in different fields.

Odeyemi, in a statement he signed and made available on Saturday, partly read, “The void created by many skilled workers that have migrated to Europe and other parts of the globe must be filled, while we continue to make the country more attractive to those leaving schools to stay there and work.

“The situation is worrisome, but we must rise to that challenge. Osun State Government is interested in producing skilled workmen who will work towards ensuring the success of various developmental plans of the governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke.

“As an institution, the challenge to produce more of these technical workmen is on us. This administration will support us in this quest. It is the only way for us as a state to drive the developmental plans of this administration and Nigeria as a whole will eventually benefit from our efforts.”
